In January of 2008, I became a weekly weekend adventurer. Loading my pack each Friday morning and hitting the road as soon as the clock struck 5 p.m., not to surface until late Sunday. I was enjoying all that the Oklahoma backcountry had to offer, leaving no stone unturned. Shortly there after The Oklahoman heard I was having true Oklahoma adventures and asked me to start sharing my outdoor shenanigans with readers weekly in the Outdoors Section of the Sunday. Simply scribing my adventures each week is how I became a staple to weekly readers as Girl vs. Wild. I shared my tales from the trails in this column from January of 2008 to June of 2010.

Girl vs. Wild: It's been a great year

Over the past year, I have taken many road trips and found some of the best adventures. I have covered thousands of miles and clocked countless hours of sleep under the stars. Looking back over my first year as Girl vs. Wild, I feel so blessed. I have met and made wonderful friends along the way. Some I stay in touch with and some I see on the trail. All hold the same value in my adventures.

Just over a year ago, I was sitting in an empty theater watching the last showing of "Into the Wild.” I remember everything about watching that film and knowing that moment was the beginning of something new for me.

I knew I was going to explore everything and leave no stone untouched. A year later, I can’t even begin to count the miles I’ve hiked or the feet I’ve climbed.

My pack has been loaded and unloaded so often it has become second nature and takes no thought. It's just what I do. I am Girl vs. Wild!

Being on the road has allowed me to see the best Oklahoma has to offer — whether it is the kindness of local Mom and Pop shops that are always ready to share a welcoming smile and the location of "the best place in town" for a burger and fries, or the few times I have needed the navigation skills of friendly strangers to get back on track and trail. Even Girl vs. Wild can get lost sometimes.

With that said I want to thank all my friends, family, complete strangers and readers for inspiring and encouraging me to be Girl vs. Wild.

Cheers to another year!
